About Jin Tanikawa

Working in Tokoname, one of Japan's Six Ancient Kilns with more than 900 years of ceramic history, Jin Tanikawa creates each vessel entirely by hand using iron rich clay that he prepares himself. His work celebrates the natural character of clay and fire, favouring texture, balance and authenticity over decoration.

The result is ceramics that feel timeless, designed not only to brew exceptional tea, but to become lifelong companions through daily use.

Mogake (藻掛け) Firing

This shiboridashi is finished using the traditional Mogake firing technique.

Before entering the kiln, strands of natural seaweed are wrapped around the raw clay. During firing, the seaweed burns away, leaving flowing organic markings that cannot be planned or repeated. Fire, ash and mineral reactions create subtle patterns unique to each vessel.

Across the lid, these delicate impressions resemble windblown grasses or tree branches, giving the piece a natural movement that continues to reveal itself over time.
