Handmade in Tokoname by Kansuke Omata (小俣冠丞), this kyusu reflects the young potter's deeply material approach to teapot making, where the character of the clay is considered as carefully as the form itself.

Omata works beyond standard commercially prepared clay, processing and blending different raw earths to achieve the qualities he seeks in strength, texture and brewing performance. His approach begins with function, but leaves ample room for the natural character of the material to remain visible.

The spherical body provides space for tea leaves to open and circulate during infusion, while the elongated yokode side handle offers controlled pouring with a natural movement of the wrist. A built-in ceramic filter keeps the construction entirely in clay and allows the leaves to infuse freely.

Mogake (藻掛け): Seaweed and Fire

Across the stone-grey body, delicate organic lines spread around the shoulder and continue down the rounded form. These markings are created through Mogake (藻掛け), a traditional Tokoname firing technique with roots dating back to the Edo period.

Before firing, strands of seaweed are carefully arranged around the clay. In the intense heat of the kiln, minerals and salts naturally present in the seaweed react with the surface, leaving behind irregular traces of colour where the two meet.

Because the final markings depend on the shape and placement of the seaweed as well as the conditions inside the kiln, the pattern cannot be precisely repeated. Each teapot carries its own record of clay, seaweed and fire.
