Tokoname-yaki Houhin by Jin Tanikawa - Handmade Handleless Teapot | KOESU

Handmade in Tokoname by Hitoshi Tanikawa (谷川仁), this handleless houhin is an expressive study in clay, fire and the natural world.

Its distinctive surface is created through 金葉絞り出し, a technique in which natural plant material is placed directly onto the vessel before firing. As the piece is fired, the material interacts with the clay and flame, leaving behind irregular traces of colour and texture. The resulting 緋色 (hiiro), a deep scarlet-red tone, emerges naturally through the firing process.

Like Mogake, the final pattern depends partly on how the natural material is positioned and how the kiln responds. No two firings produce quite the same result. Flecks of light catch across the surface, giving the otherwise restrained clay a subtle, almost metallic sparkle.

Rather than applying a pattern to the vessel, Tanikawa allows nature and fire to create the pattern themselves.

This is one of the qualities we love about Japanese handmade teaware: the finished piece is not entirely determined by the maker. The hand begins the work; nature and fire complete it.

Working in Tokoname, one of Japan's Six Ancient Kilns with more than 900 years of ceramic history, Jin Tanikawa creates each vessel entirely by hand using iron rich clay that he prepares himself. His work celebrates the natural character of clay and fire, favouring texture, balance and authenticity over decoration.
