Handcrafted Tokoname-yaki Shiboridashi by JIN TANIKAWA
Handcrafted by master potter Jin Tanikawa in Tokoname, one of Japan’s Six Ancient Kilns, this shiboridashi is a testament to quiet refinement and tradition. A renowned veteran of Tokoname-yaki, Tanikawa has won numerous awards for his creations with his own clay, which are known for their elegant simplicity and tactile warmth.
Unlike a standard Kyusu which has a handle, Shiboridashi is a unique handleless vessel without an internal strainer but the 3 small notches carved into the clay, making it perfect for brewing high-grade teas like Gyokuro and Sencha. Its unique design allows the delicate leaves to open fully and release their sweetness, resulting in a perfectly flavourful cup.
The Ancient Art of Mogake (藻掛け) Firing
This piece is made with the ancient Mogake (“seaweed wrapping”) technique, where strands of natural seaweed are applied to the raw clay before firing. In the intense heat of the kiln, the seaweed burns away, leaving behind organic, flame-kissed markings that appear like flowing ink across the surface. Because this process is unpredictable, no two vessels are alike; each is a unique work of art, a collaboration of clay, fire and nature.
Made with the Prized Clay of Tokoname
This Tokoname teaware is made from the region's prized iron-rich clay. The clay not only enhances the flavour of Japanese green tea but also gives the vessel a warm, earthy presence and natural strength.

How to Care for Your Teapot
How to Care for Your Teapot
To keep your teapot in the best condition, wash it only with water and avoid detergent. Ceramic absorb residues which can affect tea flavour.
Skip the dishwasher - Teapot is very delicate, hand-washing is the best way to prevent it from chip and damage.
Remove tea leaves once cooled and give the teapot a quick rinse to avoid stains and mold. Turn it upside down to dry faster.
