UTSUTSUGAWA Handmade Matcha Chawan
This handcrafted UTSUTSUGAWA Chawan showcases a graceful hand-painted white egret, a signature motif of this historic Nagasaki kiln. Its origins trace back to the Kansei era (1789–1801), when founder Sadamon Tanaka adopted the iron-painting techniques of Mikawachi and Arita, blending them with his own delicate brushwork depicting grasses, flowers, and birds.
The bowl’s fluid form and soft gradients capture the quiet sophistication of Japanese tea culture. Each piece is crafted by the skilled artisans of Riza Kiln, now led by its 13th generation, carrying forward the serene and poetic spirit of Utsutsugawa ware, a harmony of balance, minimalism, and beauty.
Beautifully presented in a signed wooden Tomobako (artist’s box), this Chawan makes a meaningful gift or a treasured addition to any tea lover’s collection.
