Handcrafted Tokoname-yaki Kyusu by JIN TANIKAWA
Handcrafted in Tokoname, one of Japan's Six Ancient Kilns, HONO celebrates the beauty that emerges when craftsmanship and nature work together. Made from the iron-rich Tokoname clay, it is designed for both exceptional brewing performance and everyday enjoyment.
Its soft ivory surface is calm and understated, allowing the natural firing marks to become the focal point. Delicate carved patterns encircle the body, adding subtle texture and depth without overwhelming the form. The rounded body encourages tea leaves to open fully during brewing, while the side handle provides comfortable balance and precise pouring.
The Craftsmanship
Mogake (藻掛け) Firing: The Ancient Art of Seaweed and Flame
This teapot is finished using the traditional Mogake (藻掛け) firing technique, a method unique to Japanese pottery. Before firing, strands of natural seaweed are carefully wrapped around the raw clay. As the kiln reaches high temperatures, the seaweed burns away, leaving flowing patterns in warm amber and russet tones where minerals from the seaweed have reacted with the clay.
The resulting markings cannot be planned or repeated. Every line, every variation, and every trace of colour is created naturally by the interaction of clay, seaweed, flame, and atmosphere inside the kiln. No two teapots are ever the same. This one is yours alone.
Crafted for Tea
Designed with daily brewing in mind, HONO features a carefully fitted lid and an integrated ceramic filter that allows tea leaves to expand freely while producing a clean, uninterrupted pour. The iron-rich Tokoname clay is also prized by tea enthusiasts for its interaction with the brewing water, helping produce a softer & rounder tea.
