A distinctive handmade kyusu by Hiroyuki Mizuno ( 水野博之), a Tokoname ceramic artist known for his expressive approach to traditional teapot making.

The rounded body gives this piece a strong, almost sculptural presence. Its dark grey surface carries subtle variations in tone, with Mogake firing marks emerging across the body. Rather than a perfectly uniform finish, the surface reveals the hand and kiln behind the work, giving the teapot a sense of depth that changes with the light.

The form remains rooted in the tradition of Tokoname-yaki, one of Japan's historic centres of teapot making, while the proportions and organic surface give it a distinctly contemporary character. The side handle and compact spout are shaped for practical pouring, while the generous rounded body provides ample space for tea leaves to open and release their flavour.

This is a teapot made to be used, but also appreciated as a piece of Japanese ceramic art. Each piece is individually handmade and will naturally vary in form, colour and surface.

The Ancient Art Mogake (藻掛け) Firing

Before entering the kiln, strands of natural seaweed are wrapped around the raw clay. During firing, the seaweed burns away, leaving flowing organic markings that cannot be planned or repeated. Fire, ash and mineral reactions create subtle patterns unique to each vessel.

Across the lid & body, these delicate impressions resemble windblown grasses or tree branches, giving the piece a natural movement that continues to reveal itself over time.
