Tokoname-yaki Kyusu by Gyokko-gama - Handmade Japanese Teapot | HANA

Crafted in Tokoname, one of Japan’s Six Ancient Kilns, this handmade kyusu is an earlier work from Gyokko Kiln, the family-run workshop known for its exploration of traditional Tokoname clay, surface techniques and functional teapot making.

The rounded body features a richly layered surface of reddish-brown and charcoal tones, scattered with fine ochre-yellow markings. Against this earthy background, delicate white flowers and sweeping dark leaves are painted by hand, following the curve of the teapot and making the decoration part of the form itself.

The result is a distinctive expression of Tokoname craftsmanship, bringing together clay, surface and hand-painted decoration in a teapot designed to be both appreciated and used.

The Artistry Behind the Teapot

• Hand-Painted Decoration: Fine ochre-gold speckles spread irregularly across the body, giving the teapot a richly textured with hand-painted white blossoms with subtle touches of pink are painted individually across the body
• Handmade by Gyokko Kiln: Established in Tokoname, Gyokko Kiln has produced kyusu across successive generations, combining the functionality of traditional Tokoname teaware with a wide range of decorative and surface techniques. This appears to be an earlier work from the kiln, although its exact date and individual maker remain unconfirmed.
• Functionality: The side handle offers a comfortable, balanced grip and precise control when pouring.  And the built-in ceramic filter inside the teapot easily separates the leaves from the liquor while allowing them sufficient room to expand.
