Crafted by the renowned Toshihiko Gama (Toshihiko Kiln) in the historic ceramic village of Tachikui, this extraordinary chawan is a breathtaking dialogue between raw earth and bold, gestural expression. As a proud piece of Tamba-yaki, one of Japan’s historic Six Ancient Kilns, this bowl honors centuries of tradition while embracing a remarkably modern, sculptural aesthetic.

To hold this chawan is to experience an immediate sense of grounding. The exterior surface is wonderfully tactile, with raised ridges and raw, unglazed crevices that invite your fingers to explore. The sturdy, exposed clay foot (kodai) provides a heavy, stabilizing contrast to the soft, cloud-like energy of the white slip above. It is an intentional canvas designed to elevate your ceremonial matcha, making the act of preparation as visually striking as it is meditative.

Why You’ll Love It

  • The Living Hand of Toshihiko Gama: Handcrafted at one of Tamba's most respected kilns, capturing the perfect balance of rugged heritage and artistic innovation
  • Expressive "Impasto" Texture: The thick, layered white slip creates a deeply tactile, multi-dimensional surface that makes every individual bowl an unrepeatable work of art
  • Beautiful Matcha Contrast: The creamy, warm ecru interior serves as the ultimate backdrop, making the vibrant jade green of whisked ceremonial matcha visually pop
  • Wabi-Sabi Perfection: Embracing the beauty of the asymmetric and the raw, the exposed dark clay accents ground your daily tea ritual in pure nature
