Handmade Matcha Chawan by Master potter Shunto Kato
Master potter Shunto Kato was a renowned ceramic artist and a holder of the Aichi Prefecture-designated Intangible Cultural Property title. A third-generation ceramicist, he began his journey in pottery around 1937, carrying forward his family’s legacy. Kato established his kiln, which he named Ryugama ('Dragon Kiln'), and adopted the name Shuntouen ('Shunto') to honor his craft.
This chawan is in half-cylindrical shape with straight sides and a flat bottom. Its vertical walls are thoughtfully crafted to contain matcha during whisking, helping to minimize spills and ensure a smooth preparation.
