SHIN Takayama Chasen (高山茶筌), is a traditional Japanese bamboo whisk designed especially for preparing usucha (thin matcha) with a silky, airy foam. Unlike most chasen in the market today which are mass-produced by machine outside of Japan,  this matcha whisk is handmade in Takayama, Nara Prefecture - the birthplace of chasen making with a long history dating back to the 1500s.

Each whisk is carved from a single piece of Japanese bamboo, with 80 finely split tines that offer the ideal balance between flexibility and resilience. This allows you to whisk matcha quickly and evenly, creating a smooth, clump-free, and beautifully frothy bowl. The name “Shin” refers to its refined, formal style, widely used in Japanese tea schools for its balance of elegance and functionality.

Why Choose a Shin Chasen:

  1. Specialised for Usucha: Creates fine, uniform bubbles and a smooth surface, enhancing both texture and taste
  2. Authentically Japanese: Handmade by artisans in Takayama using traditional techniques passed down for centuries
  3. Premium Quality: Crafted from natural Japanese bamboo for durability and daily use
  4. True to Tradition: Not machine-made, not overseas production — every whisk is shaped, split, and curled by hand
  5. Tea School Approved: The Shin style is trusted in formal tea ceremony practice

How to Care for Your Tea Whisk

Before 1st use:

Soak the Chasen gently in warm water for a few minutes, this softens the bamboo and prevents the prongs from snapping.

Daily care:

  • Use it gently to ensure longevity - Avoid pressing the chasen too hard against the bottom of the tea bowl, as this may cause the prongs to break
  • Do not use a dishwasher or dryer, as sudden changes in temperature or humidity can cause cracking
  • After each use, rinse the chasen with water and dry it thoroughly before storing
  • Store in a cool, dry place away from high temperatures or direct sunlight
