Takayama Chasen (高山茶筌), the traditional bamboo whisk used for preparing matcha, is a craft with a long history dating back to the 1500s. The entire production process is done by hand by skilled artisans without the use of machines. Each whisk is crafted from a single piece of bamboo with meticulous attention to detail, making it a work of art.

Even though most matcha whisks today are mass-produced outside Japan, the highest quality ones are still made in the small village of Takayama, from locally sourced and grown bamboos without chemicals. The gentle sunshine and cool breezes of the high mountain creates an ideal environment to grow the firm bamboo with a shiny glaze. This high-quality bamboo undergoes a rigorous selection process, ensuring only the best pieces are used.

SHIN is easy to use and long-lasting, making it the most trusting partner for making your smooth and frothy matcha.

How to Care for Your Tea Whisk

Before 1st use:

Soak the Chasen gently in warm water for a few minutes, this softens the bamboo and prevents the prongs from snapping.

Daily care:

  • Use it gently to ensure longevity - Avoid pressing the chasen too hard against the bottom of the tea bowl, as this may cause the prongs to break
  • Do not use a dishwasher or dryer, as sudden changes in temperature or humidity can cause cracking
  • After each use, rinse the chasen with water and dry it thoroughly before storing
  • Store in a cool, dry place away from high temperatures or direct sunlight
