SEIRAN: Tamba-yaki Matcha Chawan by Shōzō-gama
SEIRAN is a serene yet deeply expressive Tamba-yaki chawan. Crafted at the renowned Shōzō Gama kiln, this chawan captures the precise moment a summer storm breaks over the misty hills of Tamba Sasayama. It is a piece that balances 800 years of ceramic heritage with a strikingly modern, painterly aesthetic.
The Tamba-yaki Heritage
Tamba-yaki is one of Japan’s Six Ancient Kilns (Rokkōyō). Traditionally known for its rugged, earthy stoneware, the SEIRAN represents the "New Tamba" style, where traditional clay meets experimental, fluid glazing. Shōzō-gama is celebrated for this specific mastery, creating functional art that feels both ancient and alive.

Why SEIRAN is special
- The Glaze: The glaze is applied to "flow," creating a multi-layered indigo profile. You will find deep navy shadows, milky cerulean peaks, and translucent streaks that mimic the descent of rain
- The Scenery: In the world of tea, we look for "scenery" in a bowl. Gravity and the intense heat of the kiln have "painted" this piece, ensuring that the glaze pooling and flow are entirely unique to your specific chawan
- A Hugging Form: The gently rounded silhouette is designed for intimacy. It sits deep in the palms, providing a satisfying weight and exceptional heat retention, perfect for long, meditative tea sessions
