dmadeCrafted in Tokoname, one of Japan’s Six Ancient Kilns, this stunning MOGAKE kyūsu is a masterful blend of tradition, artistry, and function. Made from native rich Shudei ( 朱泥 Red clay), this unique side-handle teapot is an exquisite work of art from the renowned Gyokko Kiln.

It is adorned with the distinct Matsugawa (松皮 pine bark) texture and the ancient Mogake (藻掛け) seaweed wrapping technique, making it a unique vessel that is as beautiful to hold as it is to use.

The Artistry Behind the Teapot

  • Mogake (藻掛け): This ancient and distinctive method, dating back to the Edo period, involves wrapping seaweed on the surface of the unfired clay. As the seaweed burns off in the kiln, it leaves behind a unique and organic pattern on the teapot, ensuring no two pieces are exactly alike
  • Matsugawa (松皮): The body of the teapot is meticulously carved with the Matsugawa texture, providing a tactile, earthy feel and a unique visual character
  • Handmade by Gyokko Kiln: With over 70 years of history, this family-run workshop has been creating exquisite teapots. Every piece is individually handmade, reflecting the artisanal character of its maker

How to Care for Your Teapot

1. Wash only with water: never detergent. Ceramic absorbs residues over time, which can affect the flavour of your tea

2. Never put it in the dishwasher: Hand-washing prevents chips and extends its life so this piece can be passed down, not discarded

3. Remove tea leaves once cooled and give the teapot a quick rinse to avoid stains and mold. Turn it upside down to dry faster
