MIRU: Tamba-yaki Matcha Chawan with spout by Tanbun-gama
MIRU is a vibrant dialogue between ancient earth and contemporary expression. A deeply tactile and visually refreshing piece, it is ideal for the tea enthusiast seeking a "boutique discovery" that bridges the 800-year heritage of Tamba Sasayama with a modern, artistic sensibility.
The Artisan Heritage: A Legacy of the Six Ancient Kilns
This chawan carries the pedigree of Tanbun gama, one of the most distinguished climbing kilns in the historic pottery village of Tachikui.
- The Artist: Handcrafted by the Tanaka family, now in their 4th and 5th generations of mastery. The kiln is currently led by master potter Tanaka Shigeyoshi and his son, who continue to push the boundaries of traditional Tamba-yaki
- The Pedigree: Tanbun gama is a cornerstone of Tamba-yaki, officially recognized as one of Japan’s "Six Ancient Kilns" (Rokkoryo). This lineage represents a continuous ceramic tradition dating back to the Heian period
- Philosophy of "Beauty in Use": Following the Mingei (folk art) philosophy, Tanbun gama focuses on creating pieces that are not just museum-quality art, but soulful tools designed to be held and used in daily life

The Craftsmanship
- Vibrant Streaming Glaze (Nagashi-yu): The surface is defined by playful, decisive splashes of emerald green and cobalt blue glaze. This technique creates a "living" movement across the bowl, reminiscent of moss and spring water against the sun-drenched earth
- The Spouted Form (Katakuchi): The "spouted" silhouette makes the pouring of matcha easy into smaller cups or your lattes. Its generous width and organic rim make it a warming, intimate vessel for direct whisking and drinking
- Signature Tamba Clay: The body is composed of iron-rich, sandy clay local to the Sasayama region. Its warm, buff-colored "scorch" marks are a direct result of the intense heat and wood ash inside the climbing kiln
