KAZUHO is the most classic style of CHASEN (Matcha Whisk). Its well-proportioned shape makes it ideal for whisking usucha (thin, frothy matcha) or blending a thick, concentrated Koicha (Thick tea).

Takayama Chasen (高山茶筌) is a craft with a long history dating back to the 1500s. The entire production process is still done by hand by skilled artisans without the use of machines in a small village of Takayama in Nara perfecture. Each whisk is crafted from a single piece from locally sourced and grown bamboos, then it has to go through 8 steps to transform into a delicate instrument with meticulous attention to detail, making it a work of art.

While most matcha whisks today are machine-made outside Japan, the finest chasen are still produced in the small village of Takayama. The gentle sunshine and cool breezes of the high mountain creates an ideal environment to grow the firm bamboo with a shiny glaze.

How to Care for Your Tea Whisk

Before 1st use:

Soak the Chasen gently in warm water for a few minutes, this softens the bamboo and prevents the prongs from snapping.

Daily care:

  • Use it gently to ensure longevity - Avoid pressing the chasen too hard against the bottom of the tea bowl, as this may cause the prongs to break
  • Do not use a dishwasher or dryer, as sudden changes in temperature or humidity can cause cracking
  • After each use, rinse the chasen with water and dry it thoroughly before storing
  • Store in a cool, dry place away from high temperatures or direct sunlight
