Authentic Iron-Brush Chawan by master Kano Mitsuo
KUROGAKI chawan is a powerful, expressive work of ceramic art. This exceptional Tea Bowl is a deeply tactile and visually dramatic piece, ideal for the tea and ceramic lovers seeking unique artistry and a verifiable artisan heritage.
The Artisan Heritage: A Legacy of Excellence
This chawan carries the pedigree of one of Kyoto’s most respected ceramic lineages
- The Artist: Mitsuo (born 1903, died 1970) was the younger brother of the legendary 1st Kano Shokoku
- The Pedigree: He studied under the master Komori Shinobu, a giant in Japanese ceramic history
-
International Acclaim: Mitsuo’s work was exhibited at the international exhibitions in Paris, Italy, and Belgium. Museum Recognition: His artistry was so highly regarded that his works were purchased for the permanent collections of the Ministry of Education and the Boston Museum of Fine Arts
The Craftsmanship
Iron Brush-Mark Technique (鉄刷毛目): The surface is dominated by a complex, multi-layered glaze where a thick iron pigment has been applied with a decisive brush stroke. This technique leaves behind a raw & expressive texture, a visual dialogue between the deep, charred black and rich, earthy browns that defines the bowl's dynamic character
The Cylindrical Form (Tsutsu-gata): This deep, tall form is celebrated in the tea ceremony for its ability to intensely retain heat, making it a highly meditative and intimate bowl that warms the hands and keeps the temperature of matcha
Tactile Surface: The dense glazes create a rough, volcanic texture, offering a grounding, satisfying weight and feel that enhances the touch
The Raw Foot (Kodai): The unglazed base reveals the high-fired clay body, providing a sharp, rustic contrast to the dense glazes above
Authenticity & Provenance
KUROGAKI chawan is protected by the Tomobako (original signed wooden presentation box).
- Artist’s Signature: The box is hand-signed by Mitsuo, serving as a permanent certificate of authenticity.
- Collectible Value: In the world of Japanese ceramics, a Tomobako with this level of museum provenance significantly enhances the long-term value of the piece.
