HIDASUKI Chawan is a striking example of Bizen-yaki (備前焼), one of Japan’s oldest and most revered ceramic traditions. Made in Bizen in Okayama Prefecture using unglazed clay and fired in a wood-burning kiln, each piece is shaped by flame and ash alone without glaze, just the raw beauty of earth and fire.
The soft reddish hues and natural ash markings you see are the result of the Hidasuki (緋襷) technique, where straw is wrapped around the bowl before it is placed inside a protective container called a saya and fired in a wood kiln. Shielded from direct flames, the minerals in the straw react with the iron-rich clay during firing, leaving behind vivid scarlet and light brown markings.
A true collector’s piece, this Bizen Chawan is more than a tea bowl, it's a conversation with nature, time and craftsmanship.
Variations in size, glaze, colour, and texture are natural characteristics that highlight the unique, handcrafted nature of each piece.
