Handcrafted Tokoname-yaki Houhin by JIN TANIKAWA
AMAIRO is a houhin handcrafted by Jin Tanikawa in Tokoname, one of Japan's Six Ancient Kilns, where potters have shaped clay for over 1,000 years. Known for his quiet mastery, Tanikawa works exclusively with his own iron-rich Tokoname clay shaping vessels that feel grounded and effortless in the hand.
A houhin is a handleless teapot traditionally used to brew delicate Japanese teas like Gyokuro and Sencha. Unlike a shiboridashi, it features a built-in spout for a clean, controlled pour.
Its carefully shaped interior guides the flow of tea, while subtle clay notches act as a natural strainer. This design allows delicate tea leaves to open gently and release their aroma & sweetness, resulting in a smooth and expressive cup.
Mogake (藻掛け) Firing: The ancient art of seaweed and flame
It is fired using the traditional Mogake (藻掛け) technique. Before firing, strands of natural seaweed are wrapped around the raw clay. In the heat of the kiln, the seaweed burns away, leaving behind flowing, organic markings shaped entirely by fire and chance. No two pieces are alike. This one is yours alone.
