Handcrafted in Hagi, Yamaguchi, this teacup by Tsubakishū-gama (椿秀窯) has a beautifully layered surface that feels almost like a landscape captured in glaze.

Soft blush and warm earthy tones flow across the upper half of the cup, gradually meeting a deeper violet-grey glaze below. The boundary between the two is irregular and organic, with subtle speckling and tonal variation created through firing. A reddish-brown foot and rim add warmth and definition to the overall form.

The gently flared shape feels natural in the hand, while the relatively compact profile makes it ideal for Sencha, Gyokuro or other teas enjoyed in smaller servings.

As with traditional Hagi ware, the beauty lies in its variation. The glaze does not seek perfect uniformity. Instead, changes in colour, texture and firing become part of the character of each individual piece.

About Hagi-yaki (萩焼)

Hagi-yaki (萩焼) is one of Japan’s most celebrated ceramic traditions, known for its soft clay, expressive glazes and natural variation.

Rather than aiming for perfect uniformity, Hagi ware embraces the interaction between clay, glaze and fire. Over time, the porous clay can gradually absorb traces of tea, subtly deepening the colour and character of the vessel with use.
