Handcrafted by Nōtomi Tomohiro (納富智尋) of Ōkazan Chōun Kiln (大華山鳥雲窯), this Hagi-yaki chawan embodies one of Japan's most treasured ceramic traditions. Soft ivory glaze flows across warm clay, creating delicate blushes of pink, ochre and ash where fire and minerals met inside the kiln. No brush could paint these landscapes. They are formed naturally through the firing process, making every bowl entirely unique.
Its generous profile is designed for preparing matcha, while the slightly porous Hagi clay offers a warmth and softness that has captivated tea practitioners for centuries.
With every bowl of matcha prepared, the surface gradually changes, developing richer tones and greater depth. In Japan, this gentle transformation is known as the "Seven Transformations of Hagi" (萩の七化け), a quality that makes Hagi ware increasingly personal with years of use.

About Ōkazan Chōun Kiln
Ōkazan Chōun Kiln (大華山鳥雲窯) continues the long tradition of Hagi pottery with a focus on forms created for daily tea practice. Working with locally sourced clay and traditional wood and gas firing techniques, the kiln produces vessels that balance technical precision with the organic beauty for which Hagi ware is renowned.
Potter Nōtomi Tomohiro (納富智尋) creates works that embody the quiet elegance of Hagi ceramics, where subtle glaze movement, natural kiln effects and balanced proportions come together in pieces designed to be appreciated through years of use rather than a single moment of admiration.
About Hagi-yaki
For more than four centuries, Hagi-yaki has been regarded as one of Japan's finest ceramics for the tea ceremony. Rather than pursuing perfect symmetry or flawless surfaces, Hagi potters celebrate softness, warmth and natural variation.
Made from locally sourced clay and finished with translucent feldspar glazes, Hagi tea bowls possess a subtle porosity that allows the glaze to mature over time. As tea is prepared and enjoyed, the bowl gradually deepens in colour, revealing new character with every season. This cherished transformation is known as Hagi no Nanabake (萩の七化け), or "The Seven Transformations of Hagi," and is one of the defining qualities that has made Hagi ware beloved by tea practitioners for generations.
