This Bizen-yaki teacup was created during a first kiln firing, meaning the inaugural firing of a newly built kiln.

In Bizen, kilns are not replaced often, so the first firing of a new kiln is a rare event in a maker’s working life. It is also a moment of discovery: the potter is learning how flame, airflow, ash and temperature move through the new structure for the very first time.

That makes this cup more than simply a record of one firing. It captures the beginning of a relationship between maker and kiln.

Bizen ware is traditionally left unglazed, allowing the clay and firing itself to create the final surface. Here, warm reddish-brown moves into smoky grey, muted violet and faint olive, forming a natural keshiki (景色) across the body. These tones were not painted or glazed onto the cup, but emerged through its position inside the kiln and its exposure to flame, ash and atmosphere.

The surface is especially interesting because it reflects the unpredictable character of a kiln in its earliest stage. Before repeated firings establish familiar patterns, each piece helps reveal how the new kiln behaves.

The cup itself has a simple upright form with a softly rounded profile and compact foot. Subtle wheel marks remain visible beneath the fired surface, giving the piece a tactile quality while keeping it comfortable for everyday use.

No two Bizen pieces can be reproduced exactly. With this cup, that individuality carries an additional significance: it belongs to the first chapter in the life of a new kiln.
