HIIRO - Earth, flame and time.
Made by Bizen potter Yasuteru Mihata (御幡康照), this chawan embodies the elemental character of Bizen ware. Its broad, open form is left unglazed, allowing the clay and firing itself to become the decoration.
The warm brick-red and russet surface carries the marks of yōhen (窯変), the unpredictable transformation that takes place inside the kiln. Flame, ash and atmosphere interact with the clay, creating subtle variations in colour and texture that cannot be precisely replicated.
No two firings produce quite the same expression. Here, the kiln has left its own signature.
The slightly irregular surface and gently tapering foot give the bowl a distinctly handmade presence. In the hand, it feels substantial yet natural, while its generous opening makes it particularly comfortable for whisking matcha.
Each firing produces its own expression. No two pieces are quite alike. A contemporary Bizen chawan for those drawn to the beauty of earth, flame and imperfection.
