Bizen-yaki Handmade Matcha Chawan by SOUMA MITSURA
Handcrafted in Bizen, Okayama, home to one of Japan’s Six Ancient Kilns. This matcha chawan embodies over a thousand years of ceramic tradition. Unlike glazed pottery, Bizen-yaki is unglazed, with its surface transformed entirely by the unpredictable alchemy of fire, ash and earth.
The striking red-brown patterns across this bowl are the result of Hidasuki (緋襷) firing, where rice straw wrapped around the vessel leaves vivid flame-like markings during the long, wood-fired kiln process. No two pieces are ever alike; each bears a unique dialogue between clay and fire.
Designed for the Japanese tea ceremony yet versatile for modern tea rituals, this chawan balances rustic warmth with refined simplicity. The iron-rich Bizen clay retains heat beautifully, while its natural texture offers a grounding, tactile experience with every whisk and sip.
